9 THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU ARE STOPPED BY SARS OPERATIVES AT NIGHT

There has been a recent outcry against the infamous SPECIAL ANTI-ROBBERY SQUAD popularly known as SARS. Videos have surfaced on the internet showing different incidents and fateful occurrences involving these operatives against young people.

We’ve put a list of Dos and Donts for you if you ever encounter them. See below:

  • BE POLITE: Be polite and respectful when stopped by the police: Keep your mouth closed. Don’t say more than necessary. Greet respectfully.

 

  • SAFETY FIRST: Remember that your goal is to get home safely. If you feel that your rights have been violated, you and your parents have the right to file a formal complaint with your local police jurisdiction.

 

 

  • DON’T ARGUE: Don’t, under any circumstance, get into an argument with the police. Stay calm and remain in control. Watch your words, body language and emotions.

 

  • WATCH WHAT YOU SAY: Always remember that anything you say or do can be used against you in court.

 

 

  • KEEP YOUR HANDS WHERE THEY CAN SEE IT: Keep your hands in plain sight and make sure the police can see your hands at all times.

 

  • AVOID PHYSICAL CONTACT: Avoid physical contact with the police. No sudden movements, and keep hands out of your pockets.

 

 

  • DO NOT RUN: Do not run, even if you are afraid of the police. Stand your ground politely explain yourself.

 

  • NEVER RESIST ARREST: Even if you believe that you are innocent, do not resist arrest.

 

 

  • WAIT FOR YOUR LAWYER: Don’t make any statements about the incident until you are able to meet with a lawyer or public defender.
