Over the last few months, different shows and plays have tried to showcase Fela’s years on earth, while a few of those did make a point many were out rightly wrong as they indeed failed to throw light on what Fela and his Kalakuta queens were really about. Fela and the Kalakuta Queens chronicle Fela’s birth, rebirth, activism and his non-traditional family!!
Contrary to popular belief, Fela’s Queens were not prostitutes and low lives. They were dancers and members from his performances and they were more than that. They were a source of strength and inspirational support to Fela. They endured intimidation and torture from the Police and the general public.
Fela and the Kalakuta Queens is a story about the young women who left their families and friends to live with Fela and help popularize his music and negotiate power using performance. As members of his extended band and dancers, they collaborated in his revolutions, struggles, strife and his everyday life. Come prepared to see more light shed on the lives and times of Africa’s greatest legend, the show scheduled for 30th to 31st March 2018 at Terra Kulture kicks off at 3pm and is expected to end at 10pm on the said day.
